Liverpool launches new Centre of Excellence for Long-acting Therapeutics (CELT)
The University of Liverpool recently launched a new research centre for the development of revolutionary long-acting medicines that could transform the prevention and treatment of many diseases across the globe.
Two new therapies to be tested in ground-breaking COVID-19 clinical trial
The new therapies, part of a second therapeutic trial within the AGILE drug testing platform led by Professor Saye Khoo, will be studied in patients, with the hope of finding treatments for people with COVID-19.
Alumni & Friends Fund grants awarded to eight student projects
Thanks to the generous support of alumni and friends, more than £20,000 has been awarded from the Alumni and Friends Fund to support one-off projects across the University. Students, societies, and staff-based projects have benefited from funding that will go towards projects helping to enhance the student experience.
Alumni and staff honoured in the Queen's New Year Honours
The University is delighted to announce the following alumni and staff have been awarded honours in the Queen's New Year Honours List.
University alumnus has glacier named after him
University of Liverpool alumnus Professor David N Thomas (BSc Environmental Biology 1984; PhD Botany 1988) has been honoured with the naming of a glacier in the Antarctic Peninsula. The naming celebrates his exceptional contribution to furthering the understanding, protection and management of the region.
Mike Keating’s unusual guide to Liverpool
Alumnus Mike Keating (BA Social Studies 1972) recently published a guide to the curiosities, mysteries and little-known facts about Liverpool in his book 'Secret Liverpool - An Unusual Guide'.

Human Resources Professional Interest Network

We are delighted to relaunch the Human Resources Professional Interest Network (PIN) with an online panel discussion on 'HR lessons learnt through a pandemic'. All are welcome to join the event which will feature an overview of recent research undertaken by Dr Mariella Miraglia and Dr Huadong Yang in collaboration with the Knowsley Chamber of Commerce. The following panel discussion on the subject will be chaired by Phil McCabe (Development Manager at the Federation of Small Businesses Merseyside and Cheshire).
Heritage Public Lecture with Paul Boniface, Secretary of the National Trust

The University of Liverpool is delighted to welcome back alumnus Paul Boniface (BA Hons Political Theory and Institutions, 1985) to give this year’s Keynote Heritage Theme Lecture. Paul is Secretary of the National Trust and will chart the history of the National Trust from the end of the nineteenth century to the current day, explaining the charity’s mission and how it has responded to the changing conservation challenges and concerns of different generations.
Following the lecture, Professor Lin Foxhall, Heritage Theme Lead and Rathbone Chair of Ancient History and Classical Archaeology at the University of Liverpool will chair a panel discussion and audience Q&A.
Liverpool Responds: Who cares? What kind of life after COVID-19?

In the latest of our online Liverpool Responds events, The Archbishop of Liverpool, Malcolm McMahon and the Bishop of Liverpool Paul Bayes will join panel members including Denise Barret-Baxendale (Chief Executive, Everton Football Club), Professor Gerald Pillay (Vice-Chancellor, Liverpool Hope University), Lesley Martin-Wright (Chief Executive, Knowsley Chamber of Commerce), Zia Chaudry (Director of the Foundation for Citizenship at LJMU) and Tony Reeves (Chief Executive, Liverpool City Council) to reflect on the role churches will play in helping to rebuild the Liverpool City Region in a post-COVID world. The discussion will be chaired by Professor Michael Parkinson, Director of the Heseltine Institute at the University of Liverpool.
Sport Professional Interest Network

The Sport Business Professional Interest Network’s first event of 2021 will be an expert online panel discussion on 'Promoting diversity in sports management'. The panel will be discussing ways in which the sports business industry can promote diversity and inclusion in its management, the challenges that it faces in doing so, and examples of best practice that can be found. The event will be chaired by Football Industries MBA graduate and Founder of Snavie.com, Amy Lee.
