Barrie Edwards Memorial Lecture: "There is a pleasure in the pathless woods"

Jasmin Paris MBE (BVSc 2008) is a mother, long distance fell runner, small animal vet and research scientist. She launched into the media spotlight in January 2019 when she won the 268-mile Montane Spine race outright, breaking the overall record by 12 hours, and beating her nearest rival by 15 hours. In 2024, she became the first woman to finish the infamous Barkley Marathons in Tennessee, something many had previously considered to be an impossible feat for a woman.
In her talk, Jasmin discussed her journey in her sport, and how she continues to balance it alongside an academic career and motherhood. She discussed her preparation for extreme events such as The Spine Race and the Barkley Marathons, as well as the experiences themselves, from the hallucinations induced by sleep deprivation to the extreme exhaustion of the Barkley Marathons sprint finish, which she completed with just 99 seconds to spare.
Ultimately, Jasmin delivered an inspiring reminder of the power of self-belief, teamwork, and daring to dream big.

This event celebrated a remarkable milestone for the School and took place at St. George’s Hall. The event included the 2024 Barrie Edwards Memorial Lecture followed by a celebratory dinner and entertainment.

Vet Alumni Ball and Barrie Edwards Memorial Lecture

The 2023 Barrie Edwards Memorial Lecture, 'Through A Vet’s Eyes: How We Can All Choose a Better Life for Animals ' was delivered by Liverpool alumnus Dr Sean Wensley FRCVS (BVSc 2003). The lecture was followed by a dinner dance and attended by more than 160 alumni and partners.
