Vet awards and class notes Winter 2023
Liverpool alumni recognised with awards
Elysé Summerfield-Smith (BVSc 2017) was awarded the British Veterinary Association (BVA) Council Impact Award (John Bleby Cup) at the BVA’s annual Members’ Day on 28th September. Elysé was chosen as this year’s winner in recognition of her outstanding contribution as a graduate representative of BVA Council.
Sean Wensley (BVSc 2003) has been presented with the Edward Bridges Webb Memorial Award by the PDSA. This is the charity’s highest award for colleagues. The award recognises Sean’s outstanding contribution to the PDSA since he began working for them in 2008, as well as his wider advocacy for companion animal welfare.
Updates from fellow alumni
Rowan Wright (BVSc 2020) has recently launched Thornton Wright Equine Vets, an independent equine ambulatory practice in Lincolnshire. Rowan embarked on a partnership with Dr. Nick Bowen MRCVS to launch a continuation of Thornton Equine, which Dr Bowen established in 2017. While studying at Liverpool, Rowan undertook externships in Newmarket and Kentucky. Since graduating, Rowan has served as a House Surgeon to a busy referral hospital in the Southwest and worked in ambulatory practice in Shropshire. He is now completing a Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice (CertAVP) alongside starting this exciting new venture.
Alan Holford (BVSc 2010)'s book of veterinary crosswords has just passed 1000 copies sold on Amazon. Alan first told us about his book here and you can get your copy here.
David Hannam (BVSc 1974) spotted himself in the photo of Professor Tony King which we included in our Summer 2023 newsletter!
Professor King, Professor of Anatomy 1962-87, with a group of students
David tells us that he thinks the alumni pictured as students in the photo are, left to right: Kate Simons, Kate Whittaker, David Hannam, Dick Barrow, Ken Sibley and Martin Randle.
David said, "Prof King gave us our first ever lecture as an introduction. I remember he urged us always to keep our fingernails clean. Could be difficult in large animal practice as I later found out! Still, worth trying to do so!!" Thank you for getting in touch to put names to faces, David!
Ben Sweeney (BVSc 2008)’s vet technology start-up, VidiVet, has recently signed up its 100th veterinary practice. VidiVet is a telehealth service offering app-based triage advice from vets to provide a digital team extension to small animal practices 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
