The University of Liverpool recently celebrated the global success of a number of its graduates by presenting them with an Alumni Award at a special awards ceremony.

In total, 26 alumni were honoured at the event. As well as honouring the 2023 winners, the event also awarded a number of alumni who achieved the accolade in 2020 but were unable to collect their awards in person due to the pandemic.

Among their many achievements, the winners are leaders in fields of law, public health, business, the arts, climate change, architecture and urban regeneration.

Among them was Moises Barbera Ramos (MPhys Physics 2020), an award-winning entrepreneur, University of Liverpool enterprise fund recipient and founder of Drill Surgeries, the first start-up to successfully operate in humans without radiation, using only Artificial Intelligence. Moises volunteers as a mentor for student entrepreneurs and, as well as being a 2023 Alumni Award winner, counts among his accolades Entrepreneur of the Year 2022 and a national nomination for AI CEO of the Year 2023.

Other winners included Denise Nurse (LLB Hons Law 1997) a seasoned solicitor, business and life coach and TV presenter. Denise co-founded Halebury in 2007, reshaping the legal landscape by championing remote work for lawyers. Her magnetic presence extends to television, where she hosts ‘Escape to the Country’ on BBC One and has hosted for programmes for Sky.

Paul Curtis (BSc Hons Geology & Physical Geography 2000), is the renowned Merseyside street artist and creator of the iconic ‘For All Liverpool's Liver Birds’. In 2023, Paul collaborated with the University on a specially commissioned Eurovision artwork marking the city’s and the University’s partnership with Ukraine, entitled ‘Peace and Love.’

Also among the awardees was Megan McCubbin, (BSc Hons Zoology 2018), the scientist and adventurer who is passionate about science communication as a means of raising awareness of the climate and the biodiversity of our planet. Megan has hosted BBC Two’s Springwatch, Autumnwatch and Winterwatch, as well as Animal Park on BBC One. Read our interview with Megan in the 2022 edition of Alumni magazine.

The ceremony was held in The Tung Auditorium in the University’s impressive Yoko Ono Lennon Centre, with alumni and their families and friends joining the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gavin Brown to receive their awards.

University of Liverpool Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Gavin Brown said: “The University is incredibly proud of the achievements of our talented, international alumni community. They are a fundamentally important part of our university family and, as well as making their marks in their respective careers, many have made a real difference to our students and the wider University community, volunteering with us and supporting our alumni activity.

“It has been a terrific event to celebrate their achievements and hopefully inspire the next generation of Award winners.”
