Alumni volunteer Mostafa Karim shares why he volunteers as a school governor in his community.

Mostafa Karim studied BSc (Hons) Pharmacology and a Diploma in Biomolecular Science. After a career with Apple, he is now a social entrepreneur and founder of his own social enterprise, a Muslim matrimony organisation.

"Having been a foster carer for a decade and accumulating over 20 years of experience in safeguarding, SEND and child development, I decided to become a school governor. My goal is to support children with special needs, ensuring they thrive in life. In addition, I’m a social entrepreneur at my certified social enterprise Muslim matrimony organisation, where I’ve applied my start-up knowledge in the governor role.

My experience of being placed at a special school deepened my appreciation for the dynamic nature of educational institutions. The challenges and triumphs witnessed during this placement further fuelled my determination to contribute meaningfully as a school governor.

Wearing multiple hats as an entrepreneur equipped me with versatile skills, which I have both given and gained from in my role as a school governor. The ability to navigate complex situations, make informed decisions, and adapt to changing circumstances has proven invaluable. As I continue to engage with the school community, I find that the entrepreneurial mindset of innovation and strategic thinking has brought a fresh perspective to problem-solving and decision-making.

The multifaceted nature of being a school governor has allowed me to contribute not only my entrepreneurial skills but also the cultural insights gained from managing a faith-based matrimony site. This cultural competency has fostered a more inclusive and understanding educational environment, promoting diversity and fostering a sense of belonging among students and staff alike.

In essence, being a school governor is not only valuable but transformative. I wholeheartedly recommend this role to others who seek a meaningful and impactful way to contribute to the education sector. My experiences in the world of online connections and entrepreneurship have created a powerful narrative that underscores the importance of diversity, empathy, and innovation in shaping the future of education. I encourage anyone passionate about making a difference to embrace the enriching journey of becoming a school governor."
