Every year between the 1-7 June the United Kingdom observes National Volunteers’ Week. This week-long event gives the nation the chance to say thank you to the millions of people that volunteer every single day.

Here at the University of Liverpool we are no exception! We are really excited to take this opportunity to showcase the contributions of our alumni volunteers and thank them for all of the time, expertise and experience that they have shared with our students and wider University community over the last year and beyond.

Our alumni continue to help support the University in a variety of ways. One of the ways that our volunteers contribute the most is through supporting our students in their employability. Working closely with the Careers & Employability team, this last year alone has seen a number of alumni come back to campus to participate in networking breakfasts, speaker events and the brand new and highly successful #InspiredFutures2020.

But that’s not all! Our alumni volunteers have supported many students online via Liverpool Connect, our eNetworking and mentoring platform. They have participated in structured mentoring programmes with departments across the University, particularly in the School of Law and Social Justice as well as The University of Liverpool Management School.

Our University of Liverpool Veterinary Alumni Association (ULVAA) and Liverpool Law School Alumni Association (LLSAA) have also worked to run unique social events for alumni from those disciplines as well as supporting students through financial donations and by participating in events and guest lecture sessions.

Alumna Zoe Moore-Martin (LLB Hons, 2015) is a member of LLSAA and spoke about how her journey from student to alumni volunteer has come full circle:

“I studied at the University of Liverpool from 2012-2015. It was the best three years – learning new skills, exploring a vibrant, eclectic new city and making friends for life. Originally from London, I have now been based in the North West for over 7 years. I have been a part of the Liverpool Law School Alumni Association (LLSAA) as the North West ambassador since April 2019. The LLSAA is very active, regularly organising informal networking events, pub quizzes and assisting with mentoring opportunities. I greatly benefitted from the UoL's alumni mentoring scheme during my undergraduate studies. I am very happy to now be part of the programme in a mentoring capacity, assisting current students with their journeys. The LLSAA provides the opportunity to network and catch up with former classmates and lecturers, and so I would encourage all alumni to get involved! I have really enjoyed being part of the committee and am looking forward to hosting an event myself soon."

We’ve also seen a huge number of alumni work towards organising class year reunions and although many of these have been postponed due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis we look forward to hosting alumni back on campus in the future.

Over the course of National Volunteers’ Week 2020 we will be showcasing some of our fantastic alumni volunteers, the work that they have done and the positive impact that volunteering has had on our University community.

On behalf of the University of Liverpool we’re so happy to say thank you to every single alumni volunteer; so much of the work we do would not be possible with without your fantastic and valued contributions!
