Xingyue is a Recruitment Manager at a UK Higher Education Institution Asia & Pacific Area Representative Office, where she recruits students across different provinces in China to study in the UK.

My role involves organising training, marketing events, and working with agents – every day is different. I particularly enjoy the people-facing element of my role, which is why I choose to study Marketing.

I knew about Liverpool from the twinning of the city with Shanghai, and chose to study there due to the organisation’s own effective marketing and promotional activities in China. I loved living in the city, with great nightlife and culture, and the ability to make friends from all over the world, including other Chinese nationals. It was a great opportunity to understand different cultures, and the different ways people communicate and respond to marketing and advertising messages.

My advice for students is to plan ahead and make the most of the University’s Careers Service. The staff were very helpful, covering everything from cover letters and CV writing, to providing feedback and links to employers. Students shouldn’t be afraid of asking for help, and connecting with their peer group, alumni and employers to help build their networks and research trends in their field or industry, particularly for careers in marketing.

Once you are in work, take time each month to see how you are progressing, and where you can take advantage of opportunities to excel your career or specialise in something you enjoy.
