Aaron Kannathasan (BA Marketing 2022, MSc Advanced Marketing 2023)

Marketing graduate Aaron Kannathasan reflects on his experiences studying marketing, working alongside his studies as a Digital Coach within the Careers and Employability team and shares his advice for aspiring marketers.

What motivated you to choose the University of Liverpool for your studies?

There were a few key reasons I chose the University of Liverpool. First, its strong reputation as a well-ranked university with excellent teaching and facilities really stood out to me. On top of that, I had always aspired to study at a red brick university, and the University of Liverpool ticked all the right boxes for me.

How did you find the undergraduate and postgraduate Marketing degrees at the University of Liverpool Management School (ULMS)?

They were fantastic! The teaching was spot on, and the staff went above and beyond to support us. What stood out most was how the degrees prepared me for a career in marketing, with coursework and projects based on real-world scenarios. I appreciated the balance between exams and coursework - it kept things engaging. Plus, there were so many enjoyable elements throughout the courses.

What aspects of your studies did you enjoy the most and why?

I really enjoyed the group work. It was such a good experience working with people from different parts of the country and even the world. I also loved how so many of the modules were rooted in the "real" marketing world, making everything feel practical and relevant.

Can you share more about your experience as a Digital Coach during your time at university?

The Digital Coach role helped my confidence and life skills. The internship involved creating and delivering my own sessions for students, which really pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best way. The first part of the internship was focused on building digital skills and included talks from seasoned professionals working at big companies, which was inspiring and useful.

You recently worked as a Marketing Executive at Sciontec Developments? What did a typical day look like for you?

Everyday looks different! A typical day could involve responding to enquiries about our office or lab spaces, conducting viewings, or creating high-quality graphic design and video content to support our marketing efforts. I also spend time strategising ways to improve workspace occupancy and customer satisfaction, writing content, and managing social media.

Could you share a highlight of this role?

One highlight for me has been driving workspace enquiries and seeing deals through from start to finish. It’s rewarding to know I’ve played a part in every stage - whether that’s designing marketing materials, responding to enquiries, hosting viewings, or seeing the final agreements come together. That full-circle moment is always satisfying.

What words of advice would you give to other recent graduates looking to start a career in marketing?

Any experience is good experience. Marketing is such a broad field, so dive into whatever opportunities come your way. Take advantage of free resources like Google’s online courses to build your skills. And don’t wait for opportunities to find you, be proactive. Reach out to organisations and offer your help wherever you can, every organisation needs marketing!

What skills or experiences would you recommend they focus on to stand out in the marketing industry?

I would say, get any and as much experience as possible, it will only help you. I would definitely encourage a focus on digital skills - digital marketing, graphic design, video editing and try to push yourself to be as creative as possible. With marketing, everyone is trying to do the same thing like increase brand awareness, drive sales etc. Be your authentic self as much as possible, you'll go far if you are your authentic self! It's okay to get inspiration from others, but what can you do differently? How can you disrupt the market?

What are your plans for the future?

I currently love what I'm doing, I'm passionate about the places and spaces people work, I think they should be inspiring and should increase productivity and joy for those who work in the respective buildings. I'm not against working from home but I believe workspaces in this day of age should create an appetite for people who WFH, to come into the office and enjoy the experience.
