Reflecting on your time at the University of Liverpool Management School, what aspects of the Business Management course did you find most enjoyable?
My experience at ULMS offered a unique and fulfilling experience that stood out in several ways. The industry placement itself was undoubtedly my most enjoyable aspect, as it allowed me to gain real-world experience in a professional setting, applying the skills I had developed during the academic year. This hands-on exposure to the business environment deepened my understanding of theoretical concepts and gave me practical insights into marketing, strategic decision-making, and the challenges faced by businesses.
This blend of academic and practical learning kept me engaged and allowed me to see the immediate relevance of my studies.
Another aspect I enjoyed was the collaborative environment during seminars. Working with diverse teams on group projects not only enhanced my teamwork and communication skills but also exposed me to a variety of perspectives, enriching my understanding of business practices and behaviours.
Can you describe your experience studying in Liverpool? What aspects of student life, both academic and social, stood out to you the most?
Typically people move away from their hometown for University; However Liverpool is an exceptionally vibrant city with a strong sense of community and a welcoming atmosphere, that I just had to stay! The city is full of cultural and historical landmarks, as well as lively music scenes, which provided plenty of opportunities to explore and unwind outside of studies - I’m a regular on Lark Lane.
The combination of academic activities and vibrant social life made my time in Liverpool truly unforgettable and a well-rounded journey of growth and discovery. From student societies to sports clubs, there was always something happening on and off-campus. Being able to participate in these activities allowed me to develop new interests, form lifelong friendships, and gain skills beyond my degree.
You were active in various societies as a student. How did participating in these societies shape your understanding of different business areas and help build a professional network?
Engaging in various societies shaped my understanding of different business areas and significantly helped in building a professional network. Each society provided unique insights into its specific field, exposing me to various aspects of business and allowing me to develop a more comprehensive view of the industry as a whole - enabling me to make a firm decision when choosing my Industry Placement/Post-graduate journey. Each society offered unique exposure: Banking and Accounting deepened my understanding of financial markets and analysis, while Business Management sharpened my leadership and teamwork skills - skills vital for successful entrepreneurship!
What advice would you give to current students about making the most out of their time at University?
- Embrace every opportunity for growth and don’t be afraid to get out your comfort zone! Engage deeply with your course by actively participating in classes and connecting with faculty—this will not only deepen your understanding but also open doors for mentorship and career guidance.
- Get involved in societies and extracurricular activities. These experiences allow you to develop skills beyond academics, meet people from different backgrounds, and often lead to lifelong friendships and professional connections.
- Networking is key, so attend events, workshops, and industry talks. Don’t hesitate to reach out to alumni or professionals, as these connections can provide invaluable advice and future opportunities. LinkedIn is your best friend!
- Don’t forget balance is key! Make time for self-care and social activities. Take yourself on a solo coffee date along Lark Lane or my favourite, Yonder, in the Baltic Triangle.
You currently work as an Account Manager at Amazon Business. What does this role involve?
My role requires a deep understanding of strategic account management, advanced procurement solutions, and client-specific business needs. I manage a diverse portfolio of high-value clients across sectors like Startups and Financial Services, each with unique and demanding procurement challenges.
In this position, I am responsible for conducting in-depth analysis of purchasing behaviours and developing customised strategies that align with each client’s business objectives. My work often involves navigating negotiations and managing cross-functional projects to implement and integrate Amazon Business seamlessly into clients’ digital operations.
As an Account Manager, what challenges have you encountered so far?
I face complex challenges, particularly in tailoring procurement strategies to meet the diverse, regulated needs of clients across industries. My business degree has been invaluable in navigating these intricacies. Advanced studies in financial strategy and organisational behaviour enable me to approach client engagements with a strategic lens, balancing tailored solutions with Amazon’s broader objectives.
With a solid foundation in data analysis and project management from studying at the University of Liverpool, I efficiently prioritise across high-stakes accounts, leveraging insights to drive cost savings and operational efficiencies for clients. This strategic and analytical approach allows me to build strong client relationships and consistently deliver impactful results.
Alongside your role at Amazon, you also work as a musician, songwriter and director. How do you balance these two careers?
Balancing my roles requires strong time management, strategic planning, and a clear focus on priorities. I dedicate structured blocks of time to each path, ensuring I meet the demands of my Account Manager role while also allowing space for creative projects.
At Amazon, I maintain a disciplined schedule, staying organised and efficient to maximise productivity. For my music career, I leverage evenings and weekends, setting specific goals for each project phase—whether it’s production or writing—to make steady progress.
What inspired you to pursue a career in music production and how do you manage the creative and business aspects of your self-employed work in music?
Since I can remember I have always written music but for my own listening. I remember attending a concert and having a lightbulb moment that I wanted to be on the stage instead of the crowd. Since then, I really started to take my music career seriously!
Ultimately, both roles complement each other, enhancing my skills in creativity, problem-solving, and project management. Balancing these careers has honed my ability to switch mindsets quickly, stay adaptable, and manage diverse responsibilities effectively.
Based on your own journey, what advice would you give to recent graduates transitioning from university to the professional world?
- Be open-minded, adaptable, and welcome continuous learning! The shift from university to a career can be challenging, but it’s also an invaluable time for growth.
- Be proactive in seeking out opportunities and taking initiative, even if they fall outside your immediate responsibilities or comfort zone. Showing curiosity and enthusiasm to learn will set you apart and help you build skills quickly. Second, cultivate resilience and adaptability; the professional world often presents unexpected challenges, so being flexible and solution-focused will make you a valuable asset in any setting.
- Networking is equally essential - connect with colleagues, mentors, and industry professionals to build relationships that can offer guidance, support, and future opportunities.
- Finally, don’t underestimate the importance of balancing work with personal growth and well-being. Make time for yourself and your friends! I also recommend the book; How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie!
