Library and journals

As a graduate, you can still borrow books from the Sydney Jones and Harold Cohen Libraries, as well as access lots of online journals.

If you are not already an alumni member of the library, you can register for access to the library and to online journals via the online application form.

As an alum, you can:

  • borrow up to 10 books for four weeks from either the Sydney Jones Library or the Harold Cohen Library on campus
  • access online journals from Emerald Insight, JSTOR and Project MUSE
  • access the library’s extensive electronic resources through the ‘walk-in' service. This service is available to registered members of the library who are able to visit the library in person. Please ask at the Help Desk in the Harold Cohen or Sydney Jones Library for more information, but please note restrictions do apply.

In June 2026, we worked with our wonderful colleagues in the library to make alumni access to the library and journals easier. You can find instructions on how to access their services below.

For access to the in-person libraries and the online journals, complete the online application form >

For new library and journals members

If you are not already an alumni member of the library, you can register for access via the online application form.

To apply for access to online journals, you will need:

  • Your Alumni ID number (this is found at the top of emails sent to you by the alumni team. Can’t find it? Email alumni@liverpool.ac.uk)

To apply for access to our online journals and the libraries in-person, you will need:

  • Your Alumni ID number (this is found at the top of emails sent to you by the alumni team. Can’t find it? Email alumni@liverpool.ac.uk)
  • A photo of your self
  • A form of photo ID (either a student card, signed passport, Biometric Residence Permit, European Economic Area identity card, current UK or EEA driving license, travel card).
  • Proof of your UK home address

What happens next once I have applied for library membership?

Once you have submitted your application form, the library team will send you an email with your login and instructions on how to set a password for your new Library Search account.

Having set your password, you should now have access to the online journals.

For in-person access, a membership card will be printed for you and the library will get in touch via email to confirm once this is ready. You can pick up your card from the Sydney Jones Library during opening hours which will give you access to the library buildings and enable you to borrow books.

For existing library members

In June 2026 we made some changes to the way graduates can access the library and journals. However, if you are already an existing alumni member of the library, and we have your up-to-date email address, you can now access e-journals again. Please use your Library Search credentials to login to the e-journals page. You can reset your password if you don’t know it.

You do not need to do anything to continue to access the library in-person.

Library account expiry

To meet GDPR compliance requirements, after three years your online account will expire. To renew it, simply request a renewal via our membership form and don’t forget to contact the library team if your details change.

For continued  access to the library in-person, your account needs to be renewed using our membership form every 12 months.
