Marketing alumna Megan Curran recently returned to the University of Liverpool to share her career journey and practical marketing experience with third-year BA Marketing students, offering an insight into the industry and advice on building a successful career.
Megan graduated from the University of Liverpool in 2020 with a BA in Marketing and has since built a varied career across digital content, product marketing and campaign management. She is currently UK & Ireland Marketing Manager at DeterTech, a leading security solutions provider, where she is responsible for marketing across the UK and Ireland.
During her guest session, Megan joined third-year BA Marketing students as part of their Digital Marketing module, which was exploring content marketing, following earlier teaching on social media and influencer marketing. Drawing on her professional experience, Megan brought the subject to life through real-world examples, sharing insights into customer understanding, campaign performance and the importance of creating content that resonates with its intended audience.
She encouraged students to look beyond simply producing content and consider what audiences actually need, how marketing activity can address those needs and how businesses use insights and data to shape their campaigns. She also discussed the importance of understanding campaign performance, using relevant measures and KPIs to assess engagement and effectiveness.

Reflecting on her own career journey, Megan encouraged students to make the most of opportunities, be willing to take risks and pursue areas of marketing they genuinely enjoy. She also highlighted the importance of remaining open-minded about where their degree could take them and recognising the transferable skills they are developing throughout their studies.
Megan said “it was a such a pleasure to return to the Management School and share some of what I’ve learned since graduating. Marketing is such a varied industry, and I think one of the most valuable things you can do early in your career is stay curious, take opportunities and be open to where they might lead. It was great to bring some real-world examples into the classroom and give students a better understanding of how what they’re learning translates into practice.”
A big thank you to Megan for volunteering her time to return to the University and share her knowledge, experiences and advice with our current students.
