Alumni evening: New Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Chief Executive meets alumni in New York

Last month the University of Liverpool hosted a vibrant alumni networking reception in the elegant lower galleries of the National Arts Club in New York City.
The highlight of the evening was a thought-provoking conversation between Vanessa Reed—CEO of New Music USA and incoming Chief Executive of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic—and District Judge Wendy Beetlestone, alumna and Chancellor of the University of Liverpool.
Vanessa, who takes up her post at the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic this May, reflected on her remarkable journey from London to New York, and soon, to Liverpool—a city she described as “unique”. The conversation explored her international work in artist development, gender equality in music and offered a glimpse into her vision for the Philharmonic, one of the UK’s most revered music institutions.
Set against the backdrop of one of Manhattan’s great cultural institutions, more than 70 alumni and guests gathered for the evening, united by a shared connection to Liverpool and a love of music.
3 takeaways from the evening:
- Liverpool and New York’s musical heritage
Vanessa and Wendy discussed the musical legacy of Liverpool and New York. As Vanessa noted, the two cities’ philharmonic orchestras were founded just two years apart—in 1840 and 1842—and are among the oldest music societies in the world. - Leading with purpose and passion
Together, Vanessa and Wendy explored what Vanessa considers to be her “essence” and asked far-reaching questions about identity and its role in shaping Vanessa’s leadership style. - Fostering global connections through the arts
The conversation underscored the importance of global perspectives in cultural leadership. Vanessa’s transition from New York back to Liverpool offers fresh opportunities for international collaboration, something she is eager to explore. “Finding ways to keep connecting the unique port cities of New York and Liverpool is something I look forward to in my new role,” she said.
Alumni who attended the evening praised the opportunity to meet inspirational speakers and to discuss Liverpool and the University with other graduates.
As the sun set and conversation continued well beyond the official close of the evening, it was clear that the event had been a great success.
We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who attended. It was a great pleasure to reconnect with so many of our graduates. Thank you to our Chancellor, District Judge Wendy Beetlestone and Vanessa Reed, for making the evening so memorable. Finally, a huge thank you to our alumni team who helped make the event possible.
