Members of a water polo team pose with a trophy

Past and present members of the University of Liverpool Swimming, Diving, and Water Polo Club will be reuniting on the weekend of 2 May 2025. Although the current club consists of water polo members, alumni from the former swimming and diving sections are warmly invited to join in the celebrations.

This reunion has been organised by John Quirk (Engineering Science and Industrial Management 1977) a member of the original University of Liverpool Swimming, Diving and Water Polo Club. Thanks to John’s initiative, the full weekend schedule has been organised, and we are now reaching out to as many former club members as possible to spread the word and encourage participation.

Reunion Schedule:

Friday 2 May

  • Evening drinks and catch-up at the Hope Street Hotel

Saturday 3 May

  • Coffee meet-up at the Philharmonic
  • Inter-age group water polo tournament in the afternoon at the University Sports Centre
  • Formal dinner at the Holiday Inn Hotel

Sunday 4 May

  • Group ferry boat trip on the river, followed by lunch at the Albert Dock (tbc)

An award-winning legacy

Sport has been at the heart of student life at the University for more than 140 years, with the Athletic Union (AU) being founded in 1884. National University sport (UAU, BUSA and now BUCS) is in its 106th year and water polo is one of our most successful clubs. They have won 18 national titles with total national domination between 1971 and 1979.

The swimming club was founded in 1888, while water polo was introduced as an activity in 1923 and became part of the swimming club in 1948. It quickly became successful winning the UAU from 1951 to 1954 with Gerry Worsell the star of that show. Diving was added in the 1960s.

In the early 2010s, swimming and water polo split, and further clubs have developed and flourished for the last 15 years. Only two years ago the men’s team won the BUCS trophy and Christie competitions on the same day!

It will be good to see so many who have contributed towards the success of the club raise a glass to its continuing health. We hope you can join us. Please email alumni@liverpool.ac.uk if you'd like to attend.
