Alumni conferred in the New Year Honours 2025

University of Liverpool alumni have been conferred with honours in the New Year Honours List 2025.

Among the alumni celebrated is Chair of Musculoskeletal Science at University of Southampton and biochemistry graduate, Professor Richard Oreffo OBE (BSc Hons Biochemistry 1983) who is recognised for his services to education equality and to musculoskeletal science. Professor Oreffo is Founder and Chair of The Cowrie Scholarship Foundation which supports economically disadvantaged Black students to attend UK universities.

The University of Liverpool has held a partnership with the Foundation since 2022, which will see three scholars supported over ten years. The scholars receive a bursary from the University and an award of £6,000 per annum from the Foundation. Marine biology student, Lidia is currently in receipt of the scholarship and recently took part in the University's study abroad programme.

Leading expert in miscarriage and pre-term birth research, Professor Siobhan Quenby (MD 1998) received an MBE for services to obstetrics research. Professor Quenby, who is now Professor of Obstetrics at the University of Warwick, previously worked in the University of Liverpool’s Reproductive and Developmental Medicine department and was a Consultant Obstetrician at Liverpool Women’s Hospital.

Ken Cowen (BA Hons 1991) received a BEM for services to sport and charity. Cowen is Founder of School of Hard Knocks Charity, which helps young people from disadvantaged backgrounds navigate education successfully.

  • Sarah Squire (BA Hons Geography 1999): Deputy Director of Human Resources, The Royal Household; CVO (Commander of the Royal Victorian Order)
  • Kathryn Roe (MA Politics & Mass Media 2002): Lately Deputy Director, Department for Science, Innovation and Technology; OBE for services to cyber security
  • Daniel Longman JP (MCivicDesign 2020): Magistrate and Deputy Chair, Liverpool Bench, Diversity and Community Relations Magistrate, Trustee of the Magistrates' Association and Deputy of Merseyside and Cheshire Advisory Committee; MBE for services to the administration of justice
  • Susan Jee (BSc Hons Mathematics 1976): Non-Executive Director, Nuclear Restoration Services; MBE for services to the nuclear industry
  • David Bond (BEng Hons Electronic Engineering 1985): Lately Chief Executive Officer, Sheffield Forgemasters; CBE for services to the defence supply chain.
