Renowned alumnus Paul Curtis showcases transformative art in Liverpool's iconic Royal Liver Building
The University of Liverpool is proud to spotlight the remarkable achievements of alumnus, Paul Curtis, whose artistic journey has transformed Liverpool’s cityscape and garnered international acclaim.
Recently awarded the Alumni Award in 2023 for his significant impact on the city, Paul Curtis continues to make headlines with his first-ever public exhibition, In One Place, hosted at the iconic Royal Liver Building.
Paul, a graduate with a BSc (Hons) in Geology and Physical Geography from the University in 2000, began his career in the oil industry but found his true calling in art after facing redundancy in 2014. His foray into street art began with a mural for his niece’s bedroom, leading to the creation of the now-famous For All Liverpool’s Liver Birds in 2017.
The exhibition In One Place showcased a curated selection of Paul's prolific body of work, including his most renowned pieces like The Wings on Jamaica Street. The exhibition, curated by arts producer Laura McCann, not only displayed existing masterpieces but also featured live painting sessions, providing visitors with an interactive experience.
“I studied Geology and Physical Geography at Liverpool University. Although this was not an art degree, it led to me working in the oil industry for 14 years. The skills I picked up there were vital in succeeding in self-employment - particularly negotiation skills and professionalism,” remarked Paul Curtis about his academic background.
“I am over the moon to be exhibiting at the Liver Building. It was the inspiration for my first street art piece and has been a repeated subject of many murals I’ve painted. I am very proud to come from Liverpool, so to have my art in the flagship building is an honour for me,” expressed Paul Curtis about the exhibition.
Paul Curtis has also contributed to the University of Liverpool, creating special pieces such as Forever Home for 2020 graduates and Strength, Hope, and Recovery featured on the Alumni magazine cover in 2021. Additionally, he was commissioned to celebrate Liverpool’s hosting of the Eurovision Song Contest in 2023, resulting in the mural Peace and Love on Guild Walk.
Notably, Paul’s commitment to charitable causes shines through his exhibition. The artist has announced that during the event, he will produce two freestanding pieces, one to be auctioned and the other offered in a prize draw. All proceeds will benefit Alder Hey Children’s Charity and The Whitechapel Centre, reflecting Paul’s dedication to making a positive impact on his local community.
Due to high visitor numbers, the exhibition In One Place is extended until 1st March 2024. Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity to engage with Paul Curtis’ transformative art. For more information, visit Paul Curtis Artwork or follow Paul on social media: @paulcurtisartwork.
