Become a school governor with Governors for Schools
Could you be a school governor?
Looking for a way to give back to the community? Ever wanted to improve the education of the next generation? Governors for Schools currently have over 5,000 volunteer vacancies on school governing boards in England and Wales, and need skilled and committed volunteers to help drive strategic change. You do not have to be a parent or an educationalist to be a school governor.
By volunteering just a few hours each month – around one half-day to full-day equivalent per month – you could impact the next generation of learners by improving local education. This role gives you the opportunity to:
- Build leadership skills and gain board-level experience to support your career development.
- Develop skills in areas such as negotiation, asking challenging questions and strategy.
- Impact the educational outcomes of thousands of children.
- Play an active role in your community.
As a member of our University community, we know that you’ll have skills and experience that will be valuable to a school board. You can see for yourself by:
- Reading through this guidance, that outlines the role, the support available, and ways to apply.
- Listening to this podcast, that aims to answer some of your questions and talk about the benefits of volunteering your time to a school board.
- Taking this quiz, to find out if you’re ready to become a school governor.
You can contact Governors for School by email with any questions about getting involved, or apply to become a school governor now.
We hope that you feel inspired to impact the next generation of learners. If you decide to volunteer as a school governor, share your experience with our Volunteer Engagement Officer, Victoria Gilmore.
