University of Liverpool alumni honoured in New Year Honours 2024

Dame Amanda Blanc

A number of leading University of Liverpool alumni, staff and friends have been conferred with honours in the New Year Honours 2024.

Among our distinguished alumni, Dame Amanda Blanc (BA Hons Modern History 1989), Group Chief Executive Officer of Aviva, was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire for services to Business, Gender Equality and Net-Zero.

Dame Amanda was previously the Group CEO at AXA UK and CEO Europe, Middle East, Africa & Global Banking at Zurich Insurance. She has previously been the Chair of the Association of British Insurers and is the former President of the Chartered Insurance Institute (ACII). She qualified as an Associate of the ACII in 1992 and received an MBA from Leeds University Business School in 1999. Amanda was named in the Financial Times 25 most influential women of 2022 and was awarded The Sunday Times 2023 business person of the year.

As well as her distinguished career in the financial industry, Dame Amanda is a long-standing supporter and advocate for the University.

In addition, two of the University of Liverpool’s leading researchers were recognised for their work. Professor Simon Kenny, National Clinical Director for Children and Young People, NHS England and Consultant Paediatric Surgeon, Alder Hey Children's Hospital was conferred with an OBE for services to Paediatric Surgery and Professor Saye Khoo, Professor of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, University of Liverpool was awarded an MBE for services to Infectious Diseases and Pharmacology.

  • Professor Joyce Tyldesley (BA Hons Archaeology 1981): Professor of Egyptology, University of Manchester; OBE for services to Egyptology and Heritage
  • Michael Cladingbowl (MA English Language and Literature 1986): Director, Education Associates Limited; MBE for services to Education
  • Kerry Jackson (BA Hons Combined Honours 1987): Chief Executive, St Gemma's Hospice; OBE for services to Palliative and End of Life Care
  • Shalom Lloyd (MBA 2010): Director, Naturally Tiwa Skincare; MBE for services to International Trade and to Women in Business
  • Iain Reeve (BA Hons English Language & Literature 1985): Head of Ukraine Rail Response Team, Department for Transport; MBE for services to Rail Aid in Ukraine
