A group of Civil Engineering graduates from the Class of 1969 reunited in Liverpool to celebrate 50 years since their graduation.

The Class of 1969 were first reunited three years ago to celebrate 50 years since beginning their studies and it was fantastic to welcome them back to campus to share in the anniversary of their graduation year.

Alumni, Tony Abbott and John Mills, arranged a full day of events to help their 1969 classmates re-discover the city and the University.

Exploring the theme of ‘change’, the first reunion activity was a presentation delivered by the Alumni team on ‘University of Liverpool: then and now’. This highlighted the significant changes the University has seen in the last five decades; from a substantial increase in student numbers to becoming a global university with campuses across the world.

Following tea and coffee in the Victoria Gallery & Museum, the group headed over to Brodie Tower, where they had been taught in the 1960s, for a talk by the Dean of the School of Engineering, Professor Ahmed Elsheikh, on the Department of Civil Engineering and Industrial Design today.

The group ended their special anniversary reunion with a celebratory dinner at the Hope Street Hotel where they were joined by Professor Andrew Templeman who was a young lecturer when the cohort began their studies in 1966.

Speaking of their reunion, organisers Tony and John said: “We were a disparate group of students from a broad variety of backgrounds. Liverpool was then, and still is a great place to be. We received a first rate education in Civil Engineering.  Our class members have brought about many works over the 50 years, works which have benefited the public in countries around the world.

"With his colleagues Andrew provided us with the broad education that enabled us to go on and do this. We know how much we owe to the staff of the Department of Civil Engineering. What still brings us together is our enjoyment of each other’s company, and our sense of fun. The craic was mighty.”
