The University has been ranked 28th in the 2020 Complete University Guide (CUG), representing an improvement of eight places on last year and the University’s highest ever position in the CUG rankings. Previously, the University’s highest placement in the rankings was 30th in 2012.

The table features 10 indicators including student satisfaction, research quality, grades and graduate prospects in order to compare 131 UK Higher Education institutions.

The University improved significantly in Graduate Prospects, up 6.8% to 85.3%; Degree Completion (a projected outcome) was 92.9%, up 2.4%; and First/2.1s improved by 1.2% to 80.5%

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dame Janet Beer said: “I am delighted to see such an improvement in our position, further to our rise in last year’s table.  This ranking is the result of all the hard work of staff and, indeed, our students, who are achieving outstanding outcomes. It will help us in our activities to attract the best staff and students, from the UK and overseas.”

In separate listings covering 70 subjects, Liverpool is listed in 42. The Top five performing subjects were: Nursing (6th out of 72), Chemistry (7th out of 59), Marketing (10th out of 81), Archaeology (5th  out of 31) and Occupational Therapy (5th out of 28).

The research indicator, which measures both quality and intensity, reflects performance in the Research Excellence Framework. The combined score for these two indicators ranks Liverpool 35th, a position which will be used each year of publication until the results of REF2021 are available.
