As we celebrate graduation week, we have asked some of our Class of 2024 students to look back at their time at the University of Liverpool and think about what advice they would give to their first-year self.

Grace is a Class of 2024 BA Communication and Media with a Year in Industry student. Here, she looks back at her time at the University of Liverpool and thinks about what she would tell her first-year self.

Dear First Year Me,

You are about to take the next steps in your life, and what a journey it will be!

Although the first year of university may seem tough, I would like to let you know it gets better. As things always do! COVID times do end, and life becomes normal again.

First year of university is a struggle, completing the year online and not getting the chance to experience student life. But again, this isn’t permanent.

In second year, you meet a great group of girls and they become friends for life! And I am so proud to say you secured a highly competitive internship with the global technology company Siemens in Manchester out of hundreds of candidates.

Third year working and living in Manchester gave you the opportunity to develop your skills both personally and professionally and exposure to the media and PR industry on placement. Working with a great comms team and having the chance to create campaigns that communicate such important messages regarding digitalisation and sustainability across the world.

Coming back for final year was challenging but again a great chance to meet new people. Working part time as a career coach was such a great decision and you have made friends for life as well as gaining more self confidence and pushing yourself out of your comfort zone. You actually gave a presentation in a lecture theatre full of college kids!

I am proud of you for completing the four-year degree despite the difficulties you faced along the way and looking back I would like you to believe in yourself more and great things will happen.

Try new things, challenge yourself and make the most of the amazing opportunities available to you.

Grace

If you could go back and do it all over again would you change anything?
