We’re always inspired by our incredible graduates and love hearing what you’ve been up to since leaving the University – whether you crossed the stage just last year or decades ago.

With this summer’s graduation ceremonies just around the corner, taking place on Monday 14 and Friday 18 July 2025, we’re shining a spotlight on a few University of Liverpool graduates who have been making an impact in their industries and communities since leaving campus.

This year’s graduation ceremonies will be available to watch later – on the University website and YouTube channel.

  1. Known as the 'Molar Explorer' and the 12th women in history to ski solo and unsupported to the South Pole, Cat Burford

BA (Hons) Dentistry 2000

Cat’s journey began at the edge of the Antarctic continent, travelling 704 miles over nearly 50 days to complete the expedition while braving temperatures as low as minus 50 degrees and battling fierce winds.

  1. Renowned historian, author and broadcaster known for exploring untold stories of British history – David Olusoga.

  1. Nobel Prize Winner, Professor Charles Barkla BSc (Hons) Maths 1898, MSc 1901, Hon LLD 1931

Awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1917 for discovering the electromagnetic properties of X-rays.

  1. Winner of the Social Action Award at the Study UK Alumni Awards in Singapore, Shalom Lim

BA (Hons) Criminology and Security 2021

Shalom has improved accessibility policy affecting thousands and continues to shift public attitudes around disability through outreach and education.

  1. Award winning social entrepreneur – Lucky Ali

MBioSc 2022

Lucky Ali launched Lucy’s Café, a purpose-driven café that changes lives through food, community and education.

  1. Chancellor and US Federal Judge – The Honourable Wendy Beetlestone

Judge Wendy Beetlestone was formally installed as our new Chancellor during this summer’s graduation celebrations.

  1. From sitcom star to screen icon – Anna Maxwell Martin

BA (Hons) History 1998

Anna is a BAFTA-winning actress who’s starred in Motherland, Good Omens and Line of Duty.

  1. The first female UK Poet Laureate and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, who has received every major poetry award in the UK, Carol Ann Duffy.
