Jean Quinn

Jean graduated from the School of Medicine fifty years ago. She served as a GP for 25 years, becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of GPs, before returning to teach at the School. After retirement, she became a Councillor and Cabinet Member on Wirral Borough Council, served as a Non- Executive Director on the Board at Wirral University Teaching Hospital, and is now Deputy Chair of Trustees at Wirral Hospice St Johns.

Jean enjoyed all aspects of learning medicine and having the opportunity to be taught by, and to work with, some of the foremost medical experts whilst making lifelong friends along the way. “My University experience taught me to love medicine and people in all aspects. It also taught me to be a lifelong learner, which enabled me to develop in many other areas. It gave me confidence in my own ability to pursue the career that I wanted.”

Awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of General Practitioners following a nomination by colleagues in recognition of her services to General Practice, Joan was also awarded a Department of Health grant to establish a Cheshire and Merseyside Teaching PCT after developing a strategy to increase medical undergraduate placement capacity and gained commitment and support from all 15 PCT Chief Executives.

Jean married whilst studying at Liverpool and her family have been a great support in her career. She has five children, now all successful in their own careers, and six grandchildren who she enjoys caring for in her retirement. Nominated by her daughter Emma, Jean was recognised for this award for her lifetime of service to the NHS and local communities.
