Bill Heckle

Bill is one of the most important figures in Liverpool’s tourism industry as owner of the famous Cavern Club. He also created the Mathew Street Festival, the concept for the Hard Days Night Hotel and commissioned the Beatles statue on Pier Head. In 2020 he was awarded the Citizen of Honour by the City of Liverpool.

After graduation Bill taught at a school in Wirral until 1992 but had already started his foray into the cultural arena nine years previously. With a family of young children to worry about he didn’t want to make a mistake!

From humble beginnings to Director of the Cavern City Tours which is now marketing itself in many countries around the world, Bill received a prestigious award in the Rio De Janerio State Parliament in 2002 for his role in developing relationships between the UK and Brazil.

Reminiscing about his time as a student Bill enjoyed meeting people from a surprising number of different backgrounds and learning new life skills. “I particularly enjoyed the sport side of things and I often think back to the Comecon football team I played in whilst at University. The team included Steve Coppell, who at the time played for Tranmere but was later signed for Manchester United, his manager Tommy Docherty let him play in goal for us every Wednesday – how times have changed!”

The Beatles are a significant source of visitors to the city and a huge boost to the Liverpool economy worth around £89 million a year. Mark Horne, Development Manager for the University who nominated Bill for the award, said: “This award is quite apt in the year we launched a new Beatles MA and are nearing the unveiling the new Yoko Ono Lennon Centre.”

Bill is yet to officially receive his Citizen of Honour award due to COVID but is hoping it won’t be too long.
