About the event

Respected and revered University of Liverpool alumnus, William Lindesay OBE, will deliver a special lecture on his life’s work of exploring, researching and protecting the Great Wall of China.

Date: Tuesday 23 April

Originally from the town of Wallasey, near Liverpool, William Lindesay OBE (BSc ns Geology 1979) has lived in China for more than 30 years and, in 1987, he became the first foreigner to traverse the Ming Great Wall on foot from end to end. In 1998 he was presented with China’s Friendship Award and in 2008, the Beijing Great Wall Friendship Award. He also received in 2006, the Order of the British Empire from Her Majesty the Queen, for his selfless service and contribution to cultural exchanges between China and Britain.

The event will be hosted by the University of Liverpool’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education, Professor Gavin Brown. Also attending from Liverpool are Tim Seamans, Director of External Relations; Director of Development and Alumni Relations, Christina Turner; and Anita Irving, Deputy Director of Alumni Engagement.
