ULMS graduate returns to campus to inspire students
Last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming back Molly Owen, a recent graduate of the University of Liverpool Management School (ULMS), as a guest speaker for Business Management undergraduates.
Molly was celebrating her first work anniversary at Brother UK Ltd, where she is a HR/Payroll Officer. Molly studied a BA in Sociology and Criminology (Class of 2022) and then completed an MSc in Human Resources Management (Class of 2023).
During her visit, Molly reflected on her experience entering the HR profession, sharing valuable advice for our students. She highlighted the importance of resilience, reflection and empathy - qualities she continues to develop in her current role. Her key messages for students were both practical and inspiring:
- All experience matters: Every role, no matter how small or challenging, contributes to your professional development. Molly emphasized that working in tough conditions, like stacking shelves at 5 a.m, demonstrates resilience, work ethic and commitment - qualities that employers value.
- Your personal contribution counts: When applying for jobs, it’s crucial to present your unique skills and experiences. Molly reminded students not to outsource their identity to AI when creating a CV; recruiters want to understand what makes you distinctive and valuable.
- Career paths are diverse: Life after graduation may not be straightforward. Success doesn’t always come immediately and career journeys are rarely linear. Molly encouraged students to leverage tools like LinkedIn to network, gain visibility and explore opportunities.

Dr Hyacinthe Caldwell, Lecturer in Work, Organisation and Management and Deputy Director of Studies BA Business Management, said "I first met Molly during her MSc HRM at ULMS, and later had the pleasure of supervising her dissertation. It was wonderful to see her again and to welcome her back as a guest speaker. It is always a joy to catch up with our graduates, and I’m not at all surprised to see Molly thriving in her role. She generously shared her journey into HR, her experience at Brother UK, and offered our students thoughtful, honest advice about work and employability."
Thank you to Molly for generously volunteering her time and we look forward to future opportunities to celebrate our graduates’ achievements while strengthening connections between current students.
