Physics graduates nicknamed ‘Sloman Loungers’ celebrate annual reunion

Named for their time spent in the Guild of Students’ social space, ‘Sloman Lounge’, during their studies, a group of physicists from the 1960s revisited Liverpool recently for their annual reunion.
The graduates have remained friends for over 50 years, and this year enjoyed a trip to the Department of Chemistry, the Materials Innovation Factory, along with some spots around the city.
Reunion organiser Bob Allen shared his thoughts on the visit: “The attendees were very impressed by the state-of-the-art equipment in the Chemistry department, which is renowned as the foremost facility of its kind in the UK. The absence of chemical smells was also noted, along with the impressive and engaging presentation by Professor Peter Myers.”
The group also had the opportunity to tour the Materials Innovation Factory at the University of Liverpool, a cutting-edge facility dedicated to accelerating research and development in materials chemistry through world-class automated lab equipment and innovative approaches.
In addition to their academic visits, the alumni enjoyed the National Trust Beatles’ homes tours, starting at Speke Hall. The nostalgic tour of the two houses transported many back to the 1950s and 1960s. A smaller group of four also explored the revamped and spectacular Liverpool Library behind St George’s Hall.
Reunion organiser Bob Allen spotted himself in an old archive image of students from the 1960s relaxing in the Guild (feature image). Bob noted that the alumni in the photo included Ian Bengry on the far right, who sadly passed away a few years ago; Bev Edwards in the centre, who was once President of the University Physics Society; and Bob Thompson on the left.
If you are planning a reunion, we encourage you to reach out to the alumni team. We can assist with organising campus tours and connecting you with classmates from your year. For more information, visit our alumni reunion webpages.
