Class of 2025: Meet the graduates following in their families' footsteps
Posted on: 21 July 2025 in Community

For some of our graduates, graduation isn't just a milestone — it’s a full circle moment for those who get to watch their family walk the same campus, sit in the same lecture halls and finally cross the same stage as they did years ago.
Meet the graduate families who shared an extra special graduation day this summer.
Toby and his parents Teri and Richard
When Teri (Movement Science and Physical Education 1992) struck up a conversation with Richard (Combined Honours 1992) on the first day of university back in 1989, they'd never have dreamt that moment would lead to watching their son graduate from the same university over 30 years later.
Pictured above is Teri (middle) and Richard (right) with their friend Rob (left) on their graduation day in 1992.
Toby celebrated gaining a BA in Architecture this summer with his mum, dad and sister attending his Graduation.
The family of graduates spoke to the alumni team about what the day, and the University, means to them:

Joseph and his mum Lindsey
Joe followed in his mum's footsteps and graduated from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences with a BA in English Literature, 27 years after his mum Lindsey graduated with an LLB in 1998.
Joe is keeping his University experience going and will be returning to campus in September to start his master's in Political Science and International Relations.
Tori and her dad Stephen
Tori and her dad Stephen took the opportunity to recreate his Graduation photos from 1983 outside the Ashton Building and the Philharmonic Hall.
Stephen was thrilled to celebrate Tori gaining her degree in Communication & Media, more than 40 years after he gained his BEng Hons in Engineering Science & Industrial Management.
Grace and her mum Kate
Grace, who graduated this summer with a BSc in Chemistry, took the opportunity to recreate her mum, Kate's graduation photo from 1982, alongside her dad. Kate graduated with a BA in Modern History in the early 1980s and is pictured with her parents.
Lauren and her family of graduates
Lauren shared a video of not one, but all three of her family members who had previously graduated from the University.
