Last month Professor PJ Noble from the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences in the School of Veterinary Science was invited to deliver a keynote speech at a leading conference, the Symposium on AI in Veterinary Medicine held at the Cornell School of Veterinary Medicine in Ithaca, New York.
PJ discussed the use of language models (neural networks trained to handle text such as ChatGPT and its smaller relatives) across a range of studies from the Small Animal Veterinary Surveillance Network (SAVSNET) in Liverpool. In this one-hour session, PJ explored the technology underpinning these models as well as their strengths (allowing huge dataset analysis to be automated) and weaknesses (bias, energy consumption) highlighting the benefits of some under-the-hood knowledge when using this technology.
Student recognition
PJ was accompanied by a team of SAVSNET PhD students and researchers who successful won prizes for the best poster presentations and best platform presentation at the conference further cementing University of Liverpool and the School of Veterinary Science as key players in AI for veterinary research.
