Marketing graduate to international marketer: Megan's career journey
Posted on: 5 June 2025 in Where are they now?

Megan Curran is a BA Marketing graduate who now works as a Marketing Manager.
In this Q&A, Megan reflects on her time with the University, her career path, and why taking your time to build your career experience is important.
What did you study at University of Liverpool and how did you find the course?
I studied Marketing at the University of Liverpool. I’ve always been fascinated by how people think and behave, particularly in a consumer context, so marketing felt like a natural fit. Some of the most memorable parts of my degree were the tourism module and the group projects where we developed business ideas from scratch. These experiences really strengthened my strategic thinking skills and encouraged me to research different areas of market I wasn’t familiar with.
How was your overall experience at the University of Liverpool?
I absolutely loved it. I am originally from Shropshire, so moving to Liverpool was a big change of scenery and really pushed me out of my comfort zone. The city is so walkable - you can go from the docks, through the city centre, and end up in Sefton Park within a few hours. There’s something for everyone, whether you're into nightlife, culture, or nature. The people are incredibly friendly too - there’s a real sense of community.
What was it like graduating during the COVID-19 pandemic?
It was definitely a unique experience. I found out I’d achieved a First on a daily lockdown walk, and I submitted my dissertation from my bedroom. It was strange not having that traditional build-up to graduation, but in some ways, it was a blessing in disguise - fewer distractions and more focus. I really appreciated the effort the University put in to organise the catch-up graduations in 2022. It gave us a sense of closure and celebration.
Did you gain any work experience during your time as a student?
Yes, I worked as a Sports Marketing Assistant with Sport Liverpool, which was a brilliant experience. I managed the social media accounts and created content for daily posts across Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. I also provided live match updates and coverage for various University sports teams. It was a great way to put my marketing skills into practice and gain real-world experience.
I also worked as a club rep - a social job, but one that taught me a lot about event promotion and communication. Both roles gave me practical experience while being flexible enough to fit around my studies.
How did your career develop after graduation?
I started out as a Marketing Assistant in an entry-level role. It was tough finding a job during COVID, but I kept pushing. I then moved into a business development role, which helped me realise that I preferred the creative and strategic side of marketing over sales. Eventually, I joined Lyreco UK in a marketing role, and within six months, I was promoted from handling email communications to managing web content. Under three years later, I got another promotion and relocated to France for a year-long secondment. That was a big leap - I had to learn some French and really stretch myself professionally and personally. But it was 100% worth it.
Tell us more about your international experience. Would you recommend it?
Absolutely. Moving to France was one of the best decisions I have made. It pushed me way outside of my comfort zone, but I knew it was a temporary opportunity I had to make the most of. Learning a new language, adapting to a new culture, and working in a different market gave me confidence and broadened my skill set. For anyone thinking about taking a global opportunity - do it!
What are you doing now?
I have recently started a new role at DeterTech as the Marketing Manager for the UK and Ireland back home. It’s B2B focused and in a completely new industry, which I am really enjoying. I am continuing to learn and challenge myself, and it feels like a great next step in my journey.
What advice would you give to current students?
Make the most of your time as a student - it’s one of the few chances you’ll have to explore what you truly enjoy. Take risks, try new things, and don’t stress if you don’t have it all figured out yet. I remember Learning and Teaching Support Officer Luc Bostock once said to me when I was struggling, “This too shall pass.” That stuck with me, and it’s true. You’ve already come this far so don’t doubt yourself. If you’d told first-year Megan she’d be living in France a few years after graduating, she wouldn’t have believed it!
And what about advice for new graduates?
Be proactive and prepare yourself for some rejection as it’s part of the process. But stay resilient and keep going. Each role teaches you something, even if it’s not your dream job. I’ve tried a few different companies and roles and now I’ve really found my feet. Don’t rush. Take time to build up your experience, and trust that it’s all leading somewhere. Some of the biggest risks I have taken have turned out to be the best decisions I have made!
