The Benefactors' Fund

Supporting current students

Since the University was founded more than a hundred years ago, we have relied upon the generosity of our alumni, friends and the wider community to help enable us to lead the way in education and research.

From William Rathbone’s first gift to found a Professorship in 1880, to today’s philanthropists supporting a diverse range of activities such as student scholarships, new buildings and professorial posts, gifts large and small have helped make this a great University.

The Benefactors’ Fund provides a sustainable, unrestricted resource which can be allocated to areas which will directly enhance and enrich the University and the life of its students and researchers.

The Benefactors’ Fund is focussed on three main areas of support:

Improvement to learning facilities
Concentrates on the consistent and continuing improvement of areas within the University such as IT facilities and the Libraries, alongside on-site provisions such as the Careers & Employability Service. This fund ensures that each and every student gets the most out their time at Liverpool and helps makes the student experience here truly unique.

Undergraduate support
Provides access to education for talented students regardless of financial background. A gift to this area specifically funds the University’s Excellence Scholarships and can help a student grasp a life-changing opportunity which would quite simply not be otherwise possible.

Postgraduate research
Gifts to this area support the Sir Joseph Rotblat Alumni Scholarship, enabling alumni of the University return to postgraduate study. Specifically, these scholarships provide opportunities for gifted students whose financial circumstances would otherwise prevent them from continuing onto PhD programmes.

Areas of greatest need
Gifts to this area allow the University to use contributions as it deems appropriate.

Donations are distributed to projects across the University. If you choose to make a gift, you will be helping today’s students get as much out of their time here as you did. Please find below examples of how donations can really make a difference:

If one person gives £35, we can buy a textbook for our library
If 10 alumni give £25, we can buy a book for our reference library
If 20 alumni give £50, we can fund a bursary for one year that will help a student in financial need
If 10 alumni give £500, we can fund a note taker for one of our disabled students for one year

Your support is invaluable. If you choose to support your University, you can do so with peace of mind, knowing that your gift will be used carefully.
