A letter to my first year self: Aditi

Aditi is a recent graduate from the University of Liverpool Management School with a master’s degree in Occupational and Organisational Psychology. She now works in the Careers and Employability team at the University of Liverpool as an International Employability Experience Intern.
In this piece, she reflects upon her time at the University of Liverpool and what she would tell her one year younger self.
Dear Younger Self,
I know you are anxious and unsure about your choice right now. Just give it a year and you will realise that there was no better option than Liverpool. You are in for a beautiful journey this coming year which is going to be full of adventures.
I know moving out of India is looking a little too tough right now. You are probably even complaining about how cold and windy the weather is in Liverpool. But trust me, the people in Liverpool will be so warm that they will make up for the cold weather. In fact, by the end of the year, you will get used to all the colloquial words and even find them absolutely “boss”! And finally one day, while watching a sunset at the Waterfront, you will realise that Liverpool has started to feel like home.
You are making plans of being heavily involved in your master’s programme. Academics are also probably looking too challenging at the minute, considering how different it is from what you have been used to all your life. However, you are going to get used to it and ace it, even scoring a distinction. So just be sure to ask for help when you need it by booking office hour appointments with your lecturers and asking for feedback when you need it the most.
You will come to realise that your postgraduate programme is so much more than just studying. Understanding the significance of part-time roles, you will apply to become an International Student Ambassador and gain valuable experience working as a Research Assistant. So don’t be afraid to explore your options during your time at University because these will help you recognise your interest in the higher education sector, ultimately leading to your graduate role.
And lastly, don’t forget to make and maintain friendships, travel around different cities in the UK and have a healthy work-life-study balance. Every bit of this journey is sure to shape you to become a more independent person. So just be patient and believe in yourself because you are going to make yourself so proud one day in the future.
