We recently spent an afternoon visiting our friends in the Victoria Gallery and Museum discovering their special exhibitions.

First up, we visited The Descendants, a portrait photography exhibition by Ean Flanders. His collection pays tribute to more than forty creatives, artists and activists of African and Caribbean heritage in Liverpool. Including some of our incredible alumni.

People from Africa and the Caribbean and have been shaping Liverpool since the 1700s, forming the UK’s longest established black communities. 2023 is the 75th anniversary of HMT Empire Windrush’s arrival in Britain from Jamaica. The portraits by Ean show us a new perspective on people who are were part of the Windrush and their descendants.

Ean Flanders is from London and now works in South Liverpool. In his work as an artist, Ean explores themes of social injustice and marginalisation focusing mainly on African communities. Ean studied photography at London college of printing (the London college of communication) and he is now a member of the British Institute Of Professional Photography and Royal Photographic Society.

Travel in Style

We also took a trip back in time in the Travel in Style exhibition which features vintage advertising posters from Cunard from 1920s and 1930s.

Quiet Observation

We finished our tour of the galleries with a viewing of Lucian Freud’s painting ‘Paddington Interior, Harry Diamond’. This painting is one of the best known in the VG&M’s collection. Its setting is the artist’s home. To celebrate the centenary of Freud’s birth in December 1922, this display shows how he and a number of his contemporaries were inspired by the personal environments they lived and worked in.

The galleries are open Tuesday to Saturday 10am - 5pm, plan your visit here.
